Backend development.

The business logic behind a dependable application.

I develop backend systems that connect data, enforce business rules and support the workflows behind your product. Based in Waterlooville, Hampshire, I work remotely with UK businesses and engineering teams.

01

Build the layer your product depends on

Backend work includes application services, data models, API endpoints and the rules that govern how information moves through a system. I work on bespoke applications as well as focused additions to an existing product.

Useful starting points include a slow manual process, an integration that repeatedly fails, or business logic that has become difficult to change. We define the expected behaviour and constraints before choosing an implementation.

02

Data, performance and access

My technical skills cover Python, C++, Java, C#, Go and SQL, alongside PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, DynamoDB and Amazon Redshift. Database choice and service boundaries depend on the workload rather than a fixed preferred stack.

The design considers validation, permissions, error handling and traceable actions. For performance-sensitive systems, the scope should identify what needs measuring, the target workload and the trade-offs that matter.

03

Relevant engineering work

I helped Rose build low-latency market infrastructure for institutions, developers and AI agents, supporting trading and market analysis workflows. My wider work includes Python and C++ AI solutions, internal APIs and connected customer operations systems.

A typical engagement starts with a review of the current architecture and a bounded change. Delivery can include implementation, tests, deployment instructions and documentation for your team.

Before we start.

Can you work alongside our developers?

Yes. Engineering support can be scoped around a service, integration or backlog item, with agreed ownership, code review and handover.

Do we need to rebuild the whole backend?

Not necessarily. A focused review can identify whether a smaller change to a service, data flow or integration will address the problem.

Talk through your project.

Bring the process, system or idea you want to improve. We’ll discuss requirements, constraints and whether a focused first build makes sense.
