Engineering guide / Ryan Rose
Choose an engineer around the problem you need solved.
A practical guide to hiring a freelance software engineer for Python backends, API integrations and AI automation, with questions to ask and project evidence to inspect.
- Define the problem
- Inspect relevant work
- Agree a first deliverable
- Review and hand over
Which kind of engineer do you need?
For business rules, databases and server-side logic, look for backend engineering experience. For connecting a CRM, billing platform or internal tool, look for API integration work. For an agent that uses business information and proposes actions, look for both software integration and explicit human-review design. A long technology list alone does not show how someone approaches your problem.
Hiring a freelance Python backend engineer
Bring an example request, the expected response and the systems involved. Ask how validation, permissions, failures and testing will work. I build Python backends and connected business systems from Hampshire, working remotely with UK teams. The first deliverable might be one documented endpoint or a bounded service improvement, depending on the existing application.
Hiring an API integration developer
Specify the source of truth, the event that triggers a change and the record that should appear in the destination. Ask what happens when an event arrives twice or a service is unavailable. Useful evidence includes a redacted mapping, an acceptance example and a recovery plan. My API integration service covers REST APIs, webhooks and connections between business tools.
Hiring an AI automation engineer
Start with a reviewable output: a draft, a classified record or a task. Ask which actions require approval, how missing information is handled and how a failed run is recovered. My enquiry demonstration shows this boundary using fictional data; the Optimise study includes a measured local test and its trade-offs. Neither replaces evaluation on your own workload.
What should a first engagement include?
Agree a concrete deliverable, dependencies, access arrangements, acceptance checks and ownership of the resulting code and documentation. Ask about deployment, rollback and support responsibilities. Scope and commercial terms need to be agreed for the particular project; this guide is not a fixed-price offer.
What can you inspect before booking?
Read the AI Acquisition, Rose and Optimise project studies. Each separates my contribution from the wider business context. The enquiry demo and standalone Python example let you inspect a workflow without sharing private data. For a discovery call, bring one requirement and the constraints that matter to your team.
Discuss a similar engineering problem.
Bring one workflow, integration or backend requirement. We’ll discuss the constraints and a practical first step.
